Jade Novarino is an artist, farmer, and educator living and working in Portland, Oregon.  In 2018, she left Portland for Davenport, Iowa to pursue study and research with Paul Herrera, an inscription cutter and calligrapher who follows in the lineage and holds the legacy of Father E.M. Catich. Under Herrera, and at the epicenter of Catich's work—archived at the Art Legacy League and St. Ambrose University—she learned to carve slate. Falling deep in curiosity with the history of calligraphy and its meditative qualities, she continues to teach classes in Italic, brush lettering, and the art of correspondence, carrying traditions from Lloyd Reynolds and E.M. Catich to her more contemporary mentors, Jacqueline Svaren, Gregory MacNaughton, Paul Herrera, and more. Jade is not a master in any one of the art forms she pursues; she prefers to live by this tenet instead: “In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.”
